CC News Letter 14 March - Happy News From India!

Dear Friend, Here are two important news to report today. One is good and the other is bad.  First the good one.  In the all importan by-poll held in the states of Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Bihar of India, BJP lost all three seats. The oppositions took all three seats from BJP, including the all important seat of Gorakhpur, which was vacated by the UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanth. This seat is a citadel of BJP which held on to it over three decades. The voter turn out was less than 40 %. The results and the voting percentage shows that the Indian public in UP and Bihar have given up on BJP. It must be the beginning of the end of the right wing BJP's fascist rule in India.  One of the greatest scientists of the world , Stephen Hawking passed away today. During his last days, he was more worried about the health of the planet than his own health. It falls upon us to carry on the fight against climate change.  Andre Vltchek reports that NATO is shifting ...

‘Vote her in next, Massachusetts’ — $15 minimum wage, paid family leave ballot questions to be dropped — KENNEDY joins hunger strike 06/27/2018 07:17 AM EDT By Lauren Dezenski  (ldezenski@politico.com; @LaurenDezenski) with Brent D. Griffiths (bgriffiths@politico.com; @BrentGriffiths) GOOD MORNING, MASSACHUSETTS. NY-14'S MASSACHUSETTS CONNECTION —  A progressive woman of color, facing institutional opposition and a significant fundraising gap, wages a long-shot bid against a 10-term, scandal-free white male incumbent. Sounds a lot like Boston City Councilor  Ayanna Pressley 's campaign to unseat Rep.  Michael Capuano  in Massachusetts' 7th District, right? But those were the contours in New York's 14th District, where 28-year-old  Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez  decisively defeated Rep.  Joe Crowley  in the Democratic primary last night. There's even a Massachusetts connection to the winning campaign — Pressley sent her field dire...

FOCUS: Why the 2018 Midterms Are So Vulnerable to Hackers    Evan Osnos, The New Yorker   Osnos writes: "How much of an effect could Russian interference actually have in 2018? The effects could be meaningful, even if they never touch the tallies directly."   READ MORE   he first primary of the 2018 midterm elections, in Texas, is barely eight weeks away. It’s time to ask: Will the Russian government deploy “active measures” of the kind it used in 2016? Is it possible that a wave of disinformation on Facebook and Twitter could nudge the results of a tight congre...

Tools for Understanding State Budget Proposals

Image
MassBudget    Information.    Participation.  Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center    Democracy. Tools for Understanding State Budget Proposals     Tomorrow the Governor will kick off the state budget season by releasing a detailed Fiscal Year (FY) 2019 budget proposal. The Governor's proposal begins an important process of determining what we as a Commonwealth hope to do together through our government next year, and detailing how we will pay for those things. The likely schedule for subsequent steps in the budget process is: In April, the House will debate and approve its FY 2019 budget proposal. In May, the Senate does the same. In June, a joint House/Senate conference committee reconciles differences between these two budgets which the Legislature approves. The final budget plan, which requires the Governor's signature, will ideally be completed by July 1st, the beginning of FY 2019. MassBudget works ...

02/21/2018 07:25 AM EDT By Lauren Dezenski  ( ldezenski@politico.com ; @LaurenDezenski) with Brent D. Griffiths ( bgriffiths@politico.com ; @BrentGriffiths) AMHERST'S DEMOCRATIC DEPARTURE -  The State House delegation from the Pioneer Valley in western Massachusetts is going through yet another shift - Rep.  Solomon Goldstein-Rose , an Amherst Democrat, announced yesterday he is ditching his Democratic Party affiliation. Goldstein-Rose said in his announcement the move is not a rebuke of the state Democratic Party, but instead, a chance "to be truer in letter to the nonpartisan spirit he has sought to embody through his legislative work." The took most by surprise, including Rep.  Ellen Story  who preceded Goldstein-Rose and represented the Amherst-based district for 24 years. As Story put it to  NEPR  yesterday, "I just don't completely understand his reasoning for this. Yes, it is difficult." The now-unenrolled state rep. has also just o...

But the the overall response rate - at a fraction of one percent - is just too low. It is absolutely causing a crisis.
