John Bolton is bad news for America

Image
Last night, the White House announced the appointment of a new National Security Adviser to the president ... John Bolton. The truth is, it is downright frightening that a man who was key in sending me thousands and thousands of my fellow troops to Iraq is now the National Security Adviser to Donald Trump. Let there be no mistake - there is no war or regime change, anywhere, that John Bolton wasn't for. He sees troops not as human beings, with families, but as expendable resources, in his real-life game of Risk. We are undoubtedly closer to a war in Korea, now, and a war with Iran, with John Bolton as National Security Adviser and with Mike Pompeo as the nominee for Secretary of State. The voices of veterans in our debate -- ones who have experienced war -- have never been more important. Help us ensure we can help make them heard. Fact Checker: Is it training, or is it torture?

Image
Democracy Dies in Darkness The truth behind the rhetoric Is it training, or is it torture? Torture is back in the news because President Trump’s nominee to lead the CIA is Gina Haspel, a veteran intelligence official who once ran a black site prison in Thailand and was involved in the decision to destroy videotapes showing the waterboarding of al-Qaeda members during the George W. Bush administration. Talking about the “enhanced interrogation techniques” of the Bush years  — and whether they achieved results  —  is a lot like talking about religion. Either you believe it or you don’t, and there is little bridging the chasm. Rep. Liz Cheney is a believer.  She says these techniques did work , and she argues they are not unlike what you would see in Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape, a program that helps train U.S. military personnel in survival techniques in case they are captured by an enemy. But these two programs do ...

How we can stop John Bolton

Image
Trump just named a disgraced warmonger as his National Security Advisor.  John Bolton helped engineer the Iraq War, can’t wait to attack North Korea, and is obsessed with bombing Iran. And one thing just got really, really clear:  Trump is building a war cabinet. Even scarier: We can’t directly block Bolton. But — and this is a really big but — we  can  block Bolton’s war agenda by getting in the way of Trump’s other new war buddy, Secretary of State nominee Mike “Bomb Iran” Pompeo. John Bolton can waltz right into his new gig, but Mike Pompeo needs to clear a Senate confirmation vote before he can take the reins of the State Department. That’s where we come in.  Bolton’s shockwave appointment as National Security Advisor gives us an opening to convince senators that Pompeo is a five-alarm nominee for Secretary of State — but we’ve got to move fast. Urge the Senate to block Pompeo and shut down Bolton’s war agenda. Pompeo was already a terrifyi...

Must Reads: The astonishing number of kids who have experienced a school shooting

Image
Compelling, ambitious reads you can’t afford to miss. v John Woodrow Cox was working on a story about a teen who'd opened fire on a South Carolina school playground in 2016 when he glanced up at a TV in The Post newsroom last month and saw that another school shooting was unfolding in Parkland, Fla. "There were aerial shots of kids on gurneys," said Cox, who felt nauseated at the sight. "I started taking some deep breaths." Cox has spent more than a year reporting a series of searing stories on children and gun violence. He knew the damage done at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School would not be limited to those killed and injured. The trauma, he said, extends to "hundreds and hundreds of kids in that school — their lives are forever altered. Some of them will never recover." After Parkland, Cox and Steven Rich, The Post's database editor for investigations, worked at a breakneck pace to produce a groundbreaking analysis on school ...
