Buying An Assault Rifle with No Background Check Dan Helmer for Congress Published on Apr 30, 2018 Dan Helmer, Army veteran and candidate for Congress in Virginia's 10th District, was able to walk into a gun show and buy an assault rifle in less time than it takes to buy a cup of coffee. Dan Helmer is a progressive veteran who served in Afghanistan and is running for Congress in a very competitive Virginia congressional district. He also made a big enemy last week: the NRA. Why? Because he filmed an undercover video of himself buying an assault weapon without a background check. It took him 10 minutes. The people selling it laughed as they asked if he was a felon.
