CC News Letter 19 Feb - The Price of the Earth

Dear Friend,

Astrophysicist Greg Laughlin came up with a figure of €3000 trillion for the worth of planet Earth, given its breathable atmosphere—a shield from cosmic radiation. A close estimate is by Greg Laughlinas as US$5000 trillion. By contrast Mars is estimated as a modest $16,000 while Venus is dismissed at about a penny. Far from a joke, such estimates symbolize the religious worship of money, the loss of reverence toward nature and lifeand the reality of the Faustian Bargain in the roots of the seventh mass extinction of species. Once a species has acquired the power to destroy its environment the species needs to be perfectly wise and in control if it is to survive.

Muslims Face Increasing Discrimination, State Surveillance Under Trump
by Ali Mohsin

US President Donald Trump received another setback last week when the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, located in Richmond, Virginia, ruled against the latest version of his Muslim ban. In its ruling, the court stated that the ban is “unconstitutionally tainted with animus towards Islam” and that its central purpose is “to exclude Muslims from the United States.” Despite the ruling, “Muslim Ban 3.0” will remain in effect while the Supreme Court considers the case.

Julian Assange And His Doppelganger
by Denis A Conroy

Walking along Hans Crescent every morning on my way to work, I stop briefly to look up at the balcony fronting the room which Julian Assange occupies in the Ecuadorian Embassy. I’ve been passing his place of residence for five years now and I’ve yet to catch a glimpse of him. What I do see though, are some of Her Majesties compliant factotums doing their surveillance-best to keep tabs on the Ecuadorian Embassy and to monitor the founder of WikiLeaks…now in situ…compliments of the arse-licking British government ‘doing-it’ for American imperialism.

The Caring Profession: Peacekeeping, Blue Helmets And Sexual Abuse
by Dr Binoy Kampmark

In recent days, papers have noted how 612 women and children have alleged to have been victims of abuse, with 353 separate claims made against UN staff in peacekeeping operations.  UN official statistics similarly show that 131 cases resulted in pregnancy, many of the claimants being underage at the time.  Few UN personnel have faced jail (the current number stands at 30), with even fewer being fined, demoted or removed from office.

Venal Waste
by Marcel Duchamp Oxman

A new Netflix series kicks off with a scathing look at the Volkswagen emissions scandal of 2016 which is an absolutely MUST SEE. For folks who think they know what the VW abominable revelations were all about… do not. I can guarantee that hardly anyone knows the depth and full ramifications of the scandal. In fact, “scandal” is far too weak a word to apply to what came down; it didn’t just involve action which was morally and legally wrong causing public outrage and punishment.

Time to Honor Lucy Parsons for Black History Month
by AD Hemming

Why was Lucy Eldina Gonzales Parsons whitewashed, and that’s the right word for it, for so long out of US history and black history as well with all her high profile activism across a whole range of issues over a rather long time and thus denied her due in recognition of the tremendous number of actions she took on behalf of those without a voice and honoring her for same? Was any truth in the notion that it had to do with the reference to her by the Chicago Police referring to her as “more dangerous than a thousand rioters”? The FBI? Maybe some of of all this?

“(B)lack Power Is Not The Question; Revolution Is. It Is Only The Fist That Is Black.”
by Sourabh Kumar

As the Black Panther Party was struggling to gain a positive consensus, and political will of the oppressed masses all over the globe in later half of 1960s, and their organizational programme, and functioning was sending shivers down the spine of many white-supremacist organization like Ku Klux Klan as one of them. The fourth pillar of the democracy that is, the newspapers and news channels could not completely understand the sudden though systematic outpour of the black masses in a form never visualized before by the mainstream media.

The Ominous Shadows
by Z.G.Muhammad

It was for the first time when on Thursday, a protest demonstration was held by a Hindu right-wing group in Jammu in support of the accused arrested in the rape and murder case of eight-year-old girl Asifa Bano daughter of Mohammad Yousuf, in Kathua with the Jammu and Kashmir police providing them an escort. In the history of Jammu, perhaps there is no instance when tricolor was exploited as a symbol of nationalism for defending people accused of rape. The chief minister of the state on her micro blog had described it as “nothing  short of desecration.’
