CC News Letter 18 Feb - West Asia In Flux: Connecting The Dots

Dear Friend,

A series of events linked to West Asia in the last nine months has brought to the surface the under-currents and cross-currents in the region’s perennial struggle between occupation and hegemony, on the one hand, and resistance and liberation, on the other. It is crucial to understand how these events are related to one another, to connect the dots, as it were, in our attempt to make sense of what is unfolding in the world’s most strategic – and most dangerous — region.

Also more stories from around the world.

If you don't mind, and if you think the content of this news letter is critical for the dignified living and survival of humanity and other species on earth, please forward it to your friends and spread the word. It's time for humanity to come together as one family! You can subscribe to our news letter here http://www.countercurrents.org/news-letter/.

Population Growth — A Problem or Not?
by Steven Earl Salmony

If only we  were not so clever, hubristic and greedy…. If only our most closely held beliefs about being human conformed more closely to our creaturely constitution and capabilities…. If only we would choose to acknowledge and accept human limits and earth’s limitations…. It is worth noting that the situation we are confronting appears unprecedented in human history, so there are no past experiences, no stories, no road maps, no cookbooks from which we can derive guidance. This novelty is a large part of what makes the existential situation so difficult to perceive, acknowledge, address and hopefully overcome.

Black Panther vs. Black Panthers
by Richard Oxman

Identity politics can be praised, politics and entertainment advocating violence cannot. And contributions like what the Black Panthers made must not be forgotten.

Making Mugs of Voters: Mueller’s Russia Indictments
by Dr Binoy Kampmark

On Friday, thirteen Russians and three Russian entities were charged by special counsel Robert Mueller for conspiring in interfering with “US political and electoral processes, including the presidential election of 2016.”  While there was tooting and trumpeting on the media circuit, the more astute were less impressed.  Various intelligence professionals preferred to see the indictments as reflecting “a different level of certainty, confidence and evidence.”

Facebook is under pressure to chill or suppress speech that delegitimizes theJewish state in the context of the Palestinian national liberation movementand international solidarity for Palestinians. Time to ‘Militarise Hindus, Hinduise Nation’
by Subhash Gatade

Would it be possible to imagine that leader of any organisation openly declaring that her/his people/activists have the ability to prepare an “army” in three days , can be deployed on the front within three days, questions the ability of the security forces for quick operations, and does not face any legal hassles ?

The Nirav Modi Saga Simplified
by Ashish Singh

The problem really is: There is never just one cockroach. When you go deeper, you are likely to find more dirty, dark secrets, and none of them will be any good. PNB is gonna hurt for a while, but so are others who will find their books similarly tarnished once they investigate.

by Mousumi Roy

Heartiest Congratulations to the Govt of India. They have allowed the second billionaire who has done the biggest fraud of India to leave the country. Where are those who are charged with the responsibility of keeping an eye on the financial institutions in the country, like the revenue intelligence wings in Banks, RBI, ED and others?

Colombia: If We Do Not Get Engaged With Politics …
by Farooque Chowdhury

Renewed initiative for a peaceful and decent Colombia is facing fatal hurdles as assassinations and assaults are being unleashed against the Revolutionary Alternative Force of the Common (Fuerza Alternativa Revolucionaria del Común, acronym FARC), the political party formed by the former FARC leaders and activists. Blood of progressive activists is being spilled by the ultra-rightist/conservative forces in the land with immense possibilities.

Sickening Relations: The Royal Society and the GMO-Agrochemical Sector
by Colin Todhunter

The Royal Society in the UK is a self-governing fellowship of distinguished scientists. Its purpose is reflected in its founding charters of the 1660s: to recognise, promote and support excellence in science and to encourage the development and use of science for the benefit of humanity. Its motto, nullius in verba, is taken to mean ‘take nobody’s word for it’. It is an expression of the determination to withstand the domination of authority and to verify all statements by an appeal to facts based on experiment.
