Fundamental misunderstanding

Image
The President’s tweet betrays a fundamental misunderstanding about the role of inspectors general and other executive branch oversight and accountability offices. Shortsighted on Oversight The special counsel investigation into Russian meddling in U.S. elections continues to attract politically charged pronouncements and calls for action. As part of the recent debate, government oversight institutions have been invoked by national and party leaders. However, the discussion in Washington, DC, and in the media is hobbled by incomplete knowledge of the various oversight tools and options available for major investigations. ‘Vote her in next, Massachusetts’ — $15 minimum wage, paid family leave ballot questions to be dropped — KENNEDY joins hunger strike 06/27/2018 07:17 AM EDT By Lauren Dezenski  (ldezenski@politico.com; @LaurenDezenski) with Brent D. Griffiths (bgriffiths@politico.com; @BrentGriffiths) GOOD MORNING, MASSACHUSETTS. NY-14'S MASSACHUSETTS CONNECTION —  A progressive woman of color, facing institutional opposition and a significant fundraising gap, wages a long-shot bid against a 10-term, scandal-free white male incumbent. Sounds a lot like Boston City Councilor  Ayanna Pressley 's campaign to unseat Rep.  Michael Capuano  in Massachusetts' 7th District, right? But those were the contours in New York's 14th District, where 28-year-old  Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez  decisively defeated Rep.  Joe Crowley  in the Democratic primary last night. There's even a Massachusetts connection to the winning campaign — Pressley sent her field dire...

Must Reads: R. Kelly's #MeToo reckoning, Charlie Rose's enablers, and Erik Prince's China

Image
Compelling, ambitious reads you can’t afford to miss. When national arts reporter Geoff Edgers started working on his penetrating look at years of sexual abuse allegations involving R&B superstar R. Kelly, he was worried he wouldn't be able to uncover anything new. Kelly's behavior, which included marriage to then-15-year-old singer Aaliyah and a video that appeared to show him having sex with a 14-year-old, was well known. But Edgers, with encouragement from his editor, Christine Ledbetter, focused his reporting on the industry that enabled Kelly's career to flourish amid one disturbing scandal after another.  "How do you ignore something like this for so long?" Edgers said he asked himself. "How does that happen? You trace it back to the money, and who are the people who benefited?" Edgers, who also hosts a podcast called Edge of Fame, called, emailed and texted the people who knew the answers to those questions dozens of time...

The effects could be meaningful, even if they never touch the tallies directly."   READ MORE   he first primary of the 2018 midterm elections, in Texas, is barely eight weeks away. It’s time to ask: Will the Russian government deploy “active measures” of the kind it used in 2016? CC News Letter 14 March - Happy News From India!

Dear Friend, Here are two important news to report today. One is good and the other is bad.  First the good one.  In the all importan by-poll held in the states of Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Bihar of India, BJP lost all three seats. The oppositions took all three seats from BJP, including the all important seat of Gorakhpur, which was vacated by the UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanth. This seat is a citadel of BJP which held on to it over three decades. The voter turn out was less than 40 %. The results and the voting percentage shows that the Indian public in UP and Bihar have given up on BJP. It must be the beginning of the end of the right wing BJP's fascist rule in India.  One of the greatest scientists of the world , Stephen Hawking passed away today.
