Wag the Dog

You saw the news. Late last night Donald Trump addressed the nation — surrounded by a dark cloud of investigations and corruption charges — and announced the United States was undertaking further military action in Syria.
For years, well before his presidential campaign even began, Donald Trump assailed the Obama administration for intervening in the Syrian civil war, especially without Congressional authorization. His action last night is exactly what he promised the American people he would not do.
It is also a clear indication of what many have warned, with the hiring of John Bolton, and nomination of Mike Pompeo to Secretary of State – Donald Trump has assembled a neocon war cabinet.
Further, what does it say about a nation who bombs a country, exacerbating a humanitarian nightmare, and then refuses to help the innocent victims looking to flee, often with young children?
And finally, we continue to be concerned about a ‘Wag the Dog’ element to all of this. These strikes seem to be as motivated by the raid on Michael Cohen’s office, as they are by any pictures of the Syrian massacre that Donald Trump caught on Fox and Friends.
This is all the more reason for Congress to assert its war-making powers, and demand that Donald Trump return to them before taking any more action in Syria, or other places around the world that are unconnected to previous authorizations for use of military force.

Given the severe instability of this president, we must take into consideration that he is taking military action out of frustration with the Justice Department’s probe. That is a sad thing to say about our Commander in Chief, but it is where we are at today.
Thanks for making your voice heard.
