CC News Letter 22 Feb - Is Earth the Largest Garbage Dump in the Universe?
Dear Friend,
In an article published in New York Times, Matt Ridley (a scientist) argues that the idea of a nuclear winter following a nuclear war or exchange of bombs was propaganda put out by the Soviets during the Cold War in the 80’s to frighten the West.
Is Earth the largest garbage dump in the Universe? I don’t know. But it’s a safe bet that Earth would be a contender were such a competition to be held
Among the many strange developments in our country is a resurgence of hostility against poor Urdu, which is wrongfully alleged to be the language of Muslims. And since Muslims are people non-grata their language is language non-grata. No matter that it has nothing to do with Muslims in the first place. It is seen as that and so it must become unseen

Refuting Nuclear Winter Denial
by John Scales Avery
A few days ago I received a letter from the distinguished English author Anne Baring who informed me of an article published in The Times (February 19, 2018), entitled “Russian spies’ role in the great green hoax”. In the article Matt Ridley (a scientist) argues that the idea of a nuclear winter following a nuclear war or exchange of bombs was propaganda put out by the Soviets during the Cold War in the 80’s to frighten the West.

Trump Buoyed White Supremacists, Sparking Backlash Among Black Nationalist Groups
by Abdus Sattar Ghazali
President Trump’s first year in office proved to be just as racially divisive as his campaign — but even more consequential, says the Southern Poverty Law Center report released on Wednesday (Feb. 21). “President Trump in 2017 reflected what white supremacist groups want to see: a country where racism is sanctioned by the highest office, immigrants are given the boot and Muslims banned,” said Heidi Beirich, director of the SPLC’s Intelligence Project. “When you consider that only days into 2018, Trump called African countries ‘shitholes,’ it’s clear he’s not changing his tune. And that’s music to the ears of white supremacists.”
World Sees Florida’s 77 as a Tiny Backfire! Invading Armed Americans Kill Millions of Kids
by Jay Janson
American college kids only asking for stricter gun laws, should instead ask Iraqis, Libyans, Afghanistani, Somali, and Yemeni what to do about Americans killing Americans, and they will answer, stop invading and killing our people; ask Vietnamese, Koreans, Laotians, Cambodians, Panamanians, Dominicans, Cubans & Grenadines, and they will advise to stop praising GIs sent to kill us as heroes even when they failed to kill enough.
More Than a Fight over Couscous: Why the Palestinian Narrative Must Be Embraced
by Dr Ramzy Baroud
As soon as Virgin Atlantic Airlines introduced a couscous-style salad “inspired by the flavours of Palestine”, a controversy ensued. Israel’s supporters ignited a social media storm and sent many complaints to the company, obliging the airline to remove the reference to Palestine. In the Zionist narrative, Palestine does not exist – nor is it allowed to exist – even if merely as a cultural conception.
Lebanon: Should It Be Devil, Deep Blue Sea… Or Russia?
by Andre Vltchek
Lebanon, as so often in the past, is facing mortal danger. Saudi Arabia is putting great pressure on the Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri, a powerful but controversial figure who holds dual nationality – Saudi and Lebanese. Riyadh expects Lebanon to play by its own rules, sidelining Hezbollah, ending Iranian influence in the country, and promoting Saudi business and political interests… or else. It is a clear that foreign aid from the Gulf is increasingly conditional.

Scenario of Poor Elderly in Rural India
by Harasankar Adhikari
From a study of elderly population of Purba (East) Medinipur district in the Indian states of West Bengal it was revealed that their standard of living was determined by their economy. Another factor was the poor pattern of relationship with their immediate family members as primary care-giver and neighbourhood as well as community. Their relationship with the state as secondary support provider was also thin and evident for better living. In this study, it was revealed that they had to work for their livelihood upto their last days. Thus, about 60% of them were in paid work, out of which, 34% of them were enlisted workers under MGNEGRA. Even, 11% of them had to beg for their meals. Only 5% of them enjoyed support of their family member/relatives.
Himroo: A Dying Art
by Moin Qazi
In the narrow lanes of Aurangabad, a splendid tradition— of the intricately woven fabric called himroo–still struggles to survive. Enduring the driftwood of history , it is now relived in the houses of narrow lanes, where against the click-clack of the looms, families weave exquisite varieties of this fabric.
