We Need A Martin Luther King Day Of Truth

Dear Friend,

Full-blown panic, chaos and rage are being reported after all Hawaiians received emergency alerts on their cell phones, televisions and radios Saturday morning warning that a ballistic missile attack was imminent.

Richard Oxman writes, "The recent “mistake” in Hawaii which sent many people running for cover, as if they could actually protect themselves from an incoming ballistic missile from North Korea pushed my envelope on several counts. It’s too early to have a handle on all of the important variables at the moment, but I can ask a few questions"

The GOP-controlled House of Representatives is prohibiting Members of Congress from discussing impeachment of President Trump, when they give speeches on the Floor of the House.

Tomorrow is MLK Day. Edward Curtin writes, "As Martin Luther King’s birthday is celebrated with a national holiday, his death day disappears down the memory hole. Across the country – in response to the King Holiday and Service Act passed by Congress and signed by Bill Clinton in 1994 – people will be encouraged to make the day one of service.Such service does not include King’s commitment to protest a decadent system of racial and economic injustice or non-violently resist the U.S. warfare state that he called “the greatest purveyor of violence on earth.”

Saswat Pattanayak writes the revolt against Chief Justice of India points to much deeper malaise in the Indian society. "This is not just about Dipak Misra or Amit Shah or Narendra Modi. This fixation with complete submission to authority is a problem fostered within our places of worship where we are indoctrinated to believe that our gods can do no evil, within our own schools where our teachers can tell no lies, within our law and order system where our police and military and judges can do nothing wrong, and within own families where our elders cannot even be talked back to. "

This Is Not A Drill

Brahmanism, Patriarchy, Supreme Court And The Justice

Being Too Principled….
by Rachel Olivia O'Connor

I am an educator, and I am looking to cross paths with a principal or headmaster who has grand principles, a great capacity for dissent and gorgeous, intrepid hope. One such person could enable me to engage with youngsters and provide an alternative to what’s destroying morality in educational realms.

Considering Absolute Numbers
by Rachel Oxman

I am writing this tribute to Eugene Jacques Bullard today because I just came across a report which documents that the percentage by which white job applicants in the United States were preferred over black applicants in 1989 (twenty-eight years after Eugene’s death) was 36… and the percentage for 2015 was… 36.

It’s What They Do
by Valleria Ruselli

The percentage of moisturizers sold in the United States as “fragrance free” that contain a fragrance is 45. Of moisturizers sold as “hypoallergenic” that contain a common allergen it’s 83. But the misrepresentation of a lotion or cream used to prevent dryness in the skin, though wrong and deserving of consequences, is nothing when it comes to disingenuous organic food standards. “Organic” is supposed to mean healthier, and what’s required for food to receive that label is being watered down daily. Standards are being lowered on a regular basis, and there are less and less inspectors attempting to enforce whatever regulations are on the books.

Smashing The Box To Bits Nonviolently
by Annapurna Tosca Sriramarcel

Many of those who attended Shakespeare’s plays were illiterate, and so the Globe Theatre got very creative and would hoist up a white flag when there were going to be performances on a given day. That’s the way we must proceed as activists. But we have to go so far beyond the usual ways for moving in solidarity with multiple cultural considerations that what’s required is not just thinking outside the proverbial box, but smashing the box to bits nonviolently.

Does It Come Down To People Vs the Natural World?
by Sally Dugman

All considered, we are going to have to find and fight for a new way forward. If not, our species and other ones are doomed in large measure in terms of going forward in times ahead. It’s this simple, but also complex as we have lots of work ahead to straighten out the mess.

The Hold Of Moneylenders Grows To A Record High
by Moin Qazi

A recent report by IndiaSpend states that professional moneylenders, who can charge up to four times more interest than the government’s banking system, hold more rural debt than ever, from 19.6 percent in 2002 to 28.2 percent in 2013. According to a 2017 study by Stanford University’s Center on Global Poverty and Development, farmers take loans from informal sources at high rates of interest to meet the overall shortfall.
