Progressive Breakfast: A New American Dream for Jorge Garcia and All Of Us

TODAY:

MORNING MESSAGE

Cindy Garcia
A New American Dream for Jorge Garcia and All Of Us
Our immigration system is broken; everybody knows it. And until we have a new system, I have to speak up for all those who live in the shadows through no fault of their own. I will stand up and fight, not only my husband Jorge and our family, but for every family, because I believe in justice for all, and the American Dream.

Majority Of Americans View Trump As A Failure

Majority of Americans see Trump’s first year as a failure. NPR:“As President Trump approaches the one-year anniversary of his inauguration, a majority of Americans think his first year in office has been a failure — and that he’s divided the nation. A new NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll finds that by a 53-to-40-percent margin, Americans deemed Trump’s first year a failure. And by an almost 2-to-1 margin (61 to 32 percent), Americans said they believe Trump has divided the country since his election. Americans give Trump relatively positive marks on his handling of ISIS and the state of the economy — no small things. But on just about every other issue, they disapprove of his handling of them or they think things have gotten worse — from their views of the tax plan to the state of race relations and women’s rights to immigration, health care, the deficit and foreign policy, including his approach to North Korea. Seven-in-10 Americans are now concerned about the possibility of war breaking out with the rogue nuclear nation.”

Trump Denies Flip-Flop On Border Wall

Trump denies changing his position on border wall. NYT:“President Trump directly contradicted his own chief of staff on Thursday and said his position on building a wall between the United States and Mexico had not ‘evolved. Mr. Trump’s chief of staff, John F. Kelly, told some Democratic lawmakers on Wednesday that Mr. Trump had “evolved” on the issue of the wall, and that the president was not “fully informed” when he promised to build such a barrier last year. In an early-morning Twitter post, Mr. Trump took the unusual step of publicly pushing back against his own White House, signaling a disconnect between the president and his staff at a critical time of negotiations with Congress to avoid a government shutdown.”

Government Shutdown One Day Away

Shutdown drama grips the capitol. The Hill:“House Republican leaders are within striking distance of securing enough GOP votes to pass a stopgap spending bill to prevent a government shutdown, which would shift the funding fight to the Senate. But they aren’t out of the woods just yet. Many members of the House Freedom Caucus are vowing to oppose the spending measure unless leadership commits to putting a conservative immigration bill on the floor and boosting defense spending, which could make Thursday’s floor vote on the continuing resolution (CR) a nail-biter… Passage of the bill would shift pressure from House Republicans to Senate Democrats in the shutdown fight. While Senate Democrats have been taking a tough line, it could be hard for the party to block a bill that was passed out of the House and includes CHIP funding.”

Hopes For Bipartisan Immigration Deal Founder

Trump takes hard line on immigration, rejects ‘horrible’ bipartisan plan. Reuters:“President Donald Trump on Wednesday aligned himself solidly with conservative Republicans on immigration, criticizing a proposed bipartisan deal as ‘horrible’ on U.S. border security and ‘very, very weak’ on reforms for the legal immigration system. The Senate proposal – aimed at addressing Democrats’ demands for protections for young adults brought to the United States illegally as children and dubbed ‘Dreamers’ – fell far short of what most Republicans believe needs to happen, the president said. ‘It’s the opposite of what I campaigned for,’ Trump told Reuters in an interview. The plan was presented to Trump last week by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and Democratic Senator Dick Durbin.”

Trump Bars Haitians From Some U.S. Visas

Trump administration bars Haitians from US visas for low-skilled work. CNBC:“Haitians will no longer be eligible for U.S. visas given to low-skilled workers, the Trump administration said on Wednesday, bringing an end to a small-scale effort to employ Haitians in the United States after a catastrophic 2010 earthquake. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the change less than a week after President Donald Trump reportedly questioned in an Oval Office meeting why the United States would want to take in immigrants from Haiti and African nations, referring to them as ‘s___hole’ countries. Trump has denied using that word. DHS said in a regulatory filing that it was removing Haiti from lists of more than 80 countries whose citizens can be granted H-2A and H-2B visas, given to seasonal workers in agriculture and other industries.
