The Big Mac And The Crocodile

Dear Friend,

2017 will be remembered as the year that the so-called ‘peace process’, at least in its American formulation, has ended. And with its demise, a political framework that has served as the foundation for US foreign policy in the Middle East has also collapsed. The Palestinian leadership and its Arab and international allies will now embark on a new year with the difficult task of drumming up a whole new political formula that does not include the United States.

Cyril Ramaphosa, the next President of South Africa, was the man behind the entry of international fast food behemoth McDonalds into the country, earning him the sobriquet “The Big Mac”. Zimbabwe’s new President Mnangagwa bears the nickname “The Crocodile” from his days as head of Robert Mugabe’s secret police for, like his namesake, coming out of nowhere to suddenly snatch his victims, never to be seen again

Also more stories from around the world.

Year In Review: Will 2018 Usher In A New Palestinian Strategy?
by Dr Ramzy Baroud

2017 will be remembered as the year that the so-called ‘peace process’, at least in its American formulation, has ended. And with its demise, a political framework that has served as the foundation for US foreign policy in the Middle East has also collapsed. The Big Mac And The Crocodile; South Africa And Zimbabwe’s New Presidents
by Thomas C Mountain

Cyril Ramaphosa, the next President of South Africa, was the man behind the entry of international fast food behemoth McDonalds into the country, earning him the sobriquet “The Big Mac”. Zimbabwe’s new President Mnangagwa bears the nickname “The Crocodile” from his days as head of Robert Mugabe’s secret police for, like his namesake, coming out of nowhere to suddenly snatch his victims, never to be seen again

Extraterrestrial Fascinations: The Pentagon And UFOs
by Dr Binoy Kampmark

US Defense Department, known to most others as the Pentagon, had put aside $22 million of its $600 billion annual budget on the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP).  Identifying exactly where it was in the bureaucratic apparatus remained a contrived challenge, and it had its opponents.

Panic Of Boris Johnson In Moscow: Agony Of Rotting Empire
by Andre Vltchek

It has been all very ugly, aggressive and often distinctly vulgar: the way the British Foreign Secretary has behaved before and during his official visit to Moscow.

True Madness, Truly Unmissable: Psychopathy For Concerned Citizens
by Richard Oxman

One of the great values to viewing Happy Valley is that by the time one takes in the final episode of Season Two — if you’ve been taking in the offering very carefully all along and continue to do so up until the final frame — there’s a good chance that the heavens will open up with regard to Evil. You will have a shot at knowing what cannot be expressed in words about the most severe form of mental illness and abnormal perversity plaguing us today.

International Bodies Fail To Understand The Middle East Crisis: Part I – Trajectory to Total War
by Dan Lieberman

One sentence summarizes the Zionist expansion from an incursion to ultimate takeover of Palestinian lands – the Zionists act aggressively and the world bodies re-react passively. Institutions that defend the world community and protect regional interests have failed to understand the Middle East crisis, failed to recognize the dangers posed by the Zionist expansion, and have subverted their constituencies.

To fall in love outward is to embrace the human need to be connected with reality greater than individual mortality. For some the connection is God or Goddess, is mountain, forest, river or sea; is in diversity of species or the sublime tapestry of galactic stars. The point is to embrace flesh and color. Flesh is of the Earth. As to color, my suggestion? Green!

Forest Rights Struggle: The Making Of The Law And The Decade After
by C R Bijoy

What began as the final uprooting of forest peoples from the forests in 2002, ironically triggered a nationwide struggle that forged a unique law in 2006 on tenurial rights and forest governance, with communities in control over both environment and development. However, in the decade since then, despite having made remarkable strides, with the threat of losing their vicious hold over the forest and lives of forest peoples, the state and particularly the forest bureaucracy, elite environmentalists, and the corporates continue to confront the forest peoples and the law relentlessly. This narrative details the making of the law, and the simultaneous strengthening of the law and its subversion in law and practice, a clear reflection of the ongoing power struggle as it unfolds.

Continuity With Decline: Gujarat Election Results
by T Navin

The recent elections in Gujarat no doubt brought back BJP into power once again. But however, their influence has certainly declined. Going beyond the electoral results, a major development is the emergence of alternative voices which questioned a fake and make believe model called ‘Gujarat Model’.

The Season Of Giving: A New Year Resolution
by Moin Qazi

The great American President Franklin D. Roosevelt gave us a wonderful mantra way back in 1937. It is more relevant today than ever before: “The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have too much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little.”  Kahlil Gibran suggests something still better: “Give while the season of giving is here so that your coffer is not empty when you die.”
