State of the Union? Not good

Trigger Warning.

If next week’s State of the Union is already making you sick to your stomach, it’s because Trump, Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan are winning. The GOP controls the Presidency and Congress. They are stacking the judiciary with far-right zealots. Trump is off celebrating with the 1% in Davos.
Trump and the GOP gave a massive permanent tax break to big pharma, Wall Street and the 1% and we’re all going to pay for it. This week Trump and the GOP were forced to reauthorize the popular Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) but failed again to extend funding for essential community health centers. 800,000 Dreamers and their families are riding a rollercoaster of tension and fear that could break up their families.
We only have two months to prepare for the first primaries and six months to win the fight of our lives to stop Trump and Trumpism. A wave of primaries rolls through all 50 states in the next six months. Together we can make this a bright blue wave led by people’s champions.
People’s Action has endorsed dozens of champions running for Congress, state and local offices in 2018. Our members are knocking on doors in 25 communities for these grassroots candidates this coming weekend before the State of the Union. We win people-powered elections when real people have deep face-to-face conversations with voters.
Right now the GOP controls the governor’s office in 33 out of 50 states. Republicans control both legislative chambers in 32 states, up from only 12 in 2010.
To take back the states, we are proud announce our latest endorsements. We join our members in endorsing Cathy Glasson for Governor of Iowa, Benjamin Jealous for Governor of Maryland, Chris Giunchigliani for Governor of Nevada, and David Garcia for Governor of Arizona.
These candidates are progressive champions who have signed onto the People’s Action “Rise Up: From Protest to Power Platform.” They agree to govern with racial and gender equity, true democracy and economic systems that puts people before profits.

Our economy is about more than numbers. It’s about people. We’re fighting for new rules for our economy to ensure we’re cared for when we provide care for each other.
We need a financial system that works for people and communities, not just lenders. That’s why we’re fighting for strong rules to rein in the payday lending industry.
