Charles Pierce, Esquire
Pierce writes: "These are the real lone wolves in this country. People living on the far fringes of The Grid, nursing private grudges, and finding meaning in lunatic causes they read about on the Intertoobz and discovering in themselves the whiskey courage it takes to bring your private self into the public space."

The Big Mac And The Crocodile

Dear Friend, 2017 will be remembered as the year that the so-called ‘peace process’, at least in its American formulation, has ended. And with its demise, a political framework that has served as the foundation for US foreign policy in the Middle East has also collapsed. The Palestinian leadership and its Arab and international allies will now embark on a new year with the difficult task of drumming up a whole new political formula that does not include the United States. Cyril Ramaphosa, the next President of South Africa, was the man behind the entry of international fast food behemoth McDonalds into the country, earning him the sobriquet “The Big Mac”. Zimbabwe’s new President Mnangagwa bears the nickname “The Crocodile” from his days as head of Robert Mugabe’s secret police for, like his namesake, coming out of nowhere to suddenly snatch his victims, never to be seen again Also more stories from around the world.  If you don't mind, and if you think the conten...

Griffiths ( bgriffiths@politico.com ; @BrentGriffiths) MUCH ADO ABOUT A BREAKFAST -  Boston's annual St. Patrick's Day Breakfast is a go, with two times the hosts this year. After host  Linda Dorcena Forry  announced her surprise departure from the state Senate last month, the powers at be in South Boston officially handed interim hosting duties to U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch  (who hosted the breakfast from 1997 to 2001 when he was the state senator from Southie) and Boston City Councilor  Michael Flaherty  (who has made multiple breakfast appearances)  -  while two other candidates duke it out for Forry's vacated Senate seat and the responsibility to host the traditional breakfast next year and beyond. It may seem like much ado about an outdated tradition. But over the years, the St. Patrick's Day Breakfast has served as an important s...

Fact Checker: Trump surpasses 3,000 false or misleading claims

Image
Democracy Dies in Darkness The truth behind the rhetoric Trump surpasses 3,000 false or misleading claims If we ran a Hall of Fame for Pinocchios, the president might very well be our first inductee. The Fact Checker’s database that analyzes, categorizes and tracks every one of Trump’s suspect statements keeps growing.  Our latest update  includes 3,001 false or misleading claims Trump made since the day he took office to the end of April. When we first started this project for the president’s first 100 days, Trump averaged 4.9 fishy claims a day. The rate has accelerated over time — Trump is now averaging nearly 6.5 claims a day. Unlike other politicians, Trump is prone to repeating his Pinocchio-worthy claims, which drives up the count. Some of his greatest hits include the false claim that he passed the biggest tax cut in history (72 times), his claim that the Russia probe is a made-up controversy (53 times), and his claim that Democ...
